APC UPS Battery Backups: Sizing One for Your Setup

An APC UPS battery backup keeps your gear powered for a few minutes when the grid drops, long enough to finish a round, save your game and shut down cleanly, and it shields everything plugged in from surges. The trick is sizing: a router-only unit will not hold a gaming PC, and a large tower is overkill for a modem. Match the UPS wattage to the total load you want on battery, then check runtime and features such as automatic voltage regulation (AVR).
This article covers six APC models, from the 255W BE425M for routers and modems, through the BE600M1, BE650G1 and BE850G2 Back-UPS units for desks and consoles, up to the BX1000M and BX1500M Back-UPS Pro towers with AVR, LCD screens and listed Active PFC compatibility for gaming PCs. We compared listings and specifications, not our own load tests, and we flag where the listings contradict themselves.

Best for
Console, router and modem in a compact unit
Pros
- 23 min at 100W
- 5 backup outlets plus 2 surge
- 5A USB port
- User-replaceable battery
Cons
- 330W max
- No AVR listed
The APC BE600M1 UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector is a compact 600VA/330W unit designed to keep a computer, Wi-Fi router, modem, NAS or gaming console running through short outages. APC rates it at 23 minutes of runtime at a 100W load, which covers a console and router long enough to finish a match and save.
It has seven NEMA 5-15R outlets, five with battery backup and surge protection and two surge-only, plus a built-in 1.5A USB port that keeps a phone charging even during an outage. Surge protection is rated at 490 joules, and the battery takes about 10 hours to recharge. When the battery ages out, you can swap it in minutes with the APCRBC154 replacement, sold separately. The listing does not mention AVR or an LCD. This suits a console gamer or a light PC user; for a gaming PC under heavy load, its 330W ceiling is tight, so it gives way to the BE850G2 or BX series.
- 600VA/330W, 23 minutes at 100W
- 5 backup outlets and 2 surge-only
- 1.5A USB charging port
- User-replaceable APCRBC154 battery

Best for
Small desk setups needing surge-only room
Pros
- 8 outlets, 4 backup
- Mutable audible alerts
Cons
- Listing mixes 650VA and 550VA
- 22 min at 100W
The APC Battery Backup 650VA 390W Uninterruptible Power Supply, BE650G1, is a mid-size Back-UPS with eight outlets: four battery backup plus surge, and four surge-only. That split suits a desk where the PC and router need battery power while speakers, a printer or a charging dock only need surge protection.
There is a contradiction in the listing. The title and description say 650VA/390W, but the first feature bullet says 550VA/330W. The runtime is given as up to 22 minutes at 100W, slightly below the BE600M1. The listing does not give a surge joule rating or mention AVR. It suits readers who value extra surge-only outlets; if you need more battery-backed outlets, the BE600M1 offers five.
- 8 outlets: 4 backup, 4 surge-only
- Up to 22 minutes at 100W
- Mutable audible alerts

Best for
High-end gaming PCs with AVR
Pros
- 1500VA/900W
- 68 min at 100W
- AVR and Active PFC compatible
- LCD display, 10 outlets
Cons
- Largest tower footprint
- Replacement battery sold separately
The APC BX1500M UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector is the top unit here: a 1500VA/900W Back-UPS Pro tower that APC calls the highest VA capacity it offers for home use. It lists up to 68 minutes of runtime at a 100W load, and its 900W ceiling leaves real headroom for a high-end gaming PC plus monitors.
AVR corrects brownouts from 88V and surges of plus or minus 13 percent by boosting or trimming to a stable 120V without draining the battery, and the listing states it is Active PFC compatible for gaming PCs. It has ten outlets, five backup and five surge-only, plus coaxial and Ethernet surge protection, a 789 joule rating, an LCD showing charge level, estimated runtime, load and input voltage, and ENERGY STAR certification for 92 percent plus efficiency. The APCRBC124 battery is user-replaceable. This is the choice for a gaming rig with a power-hungry graphics card.
- 1500VA/900W, up to 68 minutes at 100W
- AVR and Active PFC compatible
- 10 outlets plus coax and Ethernet protection
- LCD status display, ENERGY STAR

Best for
Router and modem only backup
Pros
- Wall-mountable compact design
- 4 backup outlets
Cons
- 255W max
- 15 min at 100W
The APC BE425M UPS Battery Backup is the smallest unit here, a 425VA/255W mini UPS that APC describes as purpose-built for router and modem setups. It delivers up to 15 minutes at 100W, and with a router and modem drawing far less, it keeps your connection up through short blips so a cloud save or party chat does not drop.
It offers six outlets, four battery backup and two surge-only, with a 180 joule surge rating and about 8 hours to recharge. A compact, wall-mountable design fits under a desk or on a wall in a dorm or apartment. It is not meant for a gaming PC; think of it as network insurance, and step up to the BE600M1 if a console needs backup too.
- 425VA/255W, 15 minutes at 100W
- 4 backup outlets, 2 surge-only
- Wall-mountable compact design

Best for
Mid-range desks with many devices
Pros
- 850VA/450W, 35 min at 100W
- 6 backup outlets
- 2 USB-A ports
- Silenceable alarm
Cons
- No AVR listed
- Spec sheet voltage error
The APC BE850G2 UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector is an 850VA/450W unit with up to 35 minutes of runtime at 100W. It has the most battery-backed outlets among the Back-UPS models here: nine NEMA outlets, six with battery backup and three surge-only, plus two USB-A ports sharing 5V/2.4A.
A silenceable alarm and LED indicators show status, the RBC17 battery is user-replaceable, and it recharges in about 8 hours. The specification sheet lists an output voltage of 850 volts, which is clearly an error. The listing does not mention AVR. It suits a mid-range desk with a PC, monitor, NAS and network gear, and gives way to the BX1000M if you want AVR and an LCD.
- 850VA/450W, 35 minutes at 100W
- 6 backup and 3 surge-only outlets
- 2 USB-A charging ports
- User-replaceable RBC17 battery

The APC 1000VA 600W Pro UPS Battery Backup, BX1000M, brings the Back-UPS Pro feature set to a 1000VA/600W tower. It lists over 42 minutes of runtime at 100W and shares the BX1500M’s AVR, which corrects brownouts from 88V and surges of plus or minus 13 percent, along with listed Active PFC compatibility for gaming PCs.
It has eight outlets, four backup and four surge-only, with coaxial and Ethernet surge protection and the highest joule rating here at 1103. An LCD shows battery level, load, estimated runtime and power conditions. This suits a mainstream gaming PC and monitor; if your rig pulls closer to 600W under load, the BX1500M adds headroom.
- 1000VA/600W, over 42 minutes at 100W
- AVR and Active PFC compatible
- LCD display, 1103 joules
- Coax and Ethernet surge protection

NOTES
Buying Tips for APC UPS Battery Backups
Size by watts, not VA. Add up what you want on battery: the PC’s real draw under load, monitors, router and modem. Pick a UPS whose wattage rating sits comfortably above that total, since running near the limit shortens runtime sharply. Remember that runtime figures here are quoted at 100W, and a gaming PC under load often draws several times that.
For gaming PCs, favor the BX series. Both BX listings explicitly mention AVR and Active PFC compatibility, while the BE listings do not, so a modern gaming power supply is on safer ground with the BX1000M or BX1500M. Plug only essentials into battery outlets and put printers and speakers on surge-only ones. If you need hours rather than minutes during long outages, a portable battery pack is a different tool for that job.
Plan for battery replacement. UPS batteries wear out, and every model here uses a user-replaceable battery with a named APC replacement part. For medical devices, a UPS is not a substitute for a dedicated solution such as a CPAP battery.
FAQ
What size APC UPS do I need for a gaming PC?
Estimate your system’s load in watts and choose a unit rated well above it. For most gaming PCs, that points to the BX1000M or BX1500M, which also list AVR and Active PFC compatibility.
Which APC UPS is best for a router and modem only?
The BE425M, a compact 425VA/255W unit purpose-built for router and modem setups.
Is the BE650G1 650VA or 550VA?
The title and description say 650VA/390W, but one feature bullet says 550VA/330W. Treat 330W as the conservative figure when sizing.
Which APC units have an LCD display?
The BX1000M and BX1500M. The Back-UPS BE models use indicators and audible alerts instead.
Can I replace the battery myself?
Yes. Each listing names a user-replaceable APC battery, such as APCRBC154 for the BE600M1 and APCRBC124 for the BX1500M, sold separately.
